Marc Lamont Hill once admitted on The Joe Budden Podcast that he wished he were more business-savvy like Roland Martin. Hill’s comment highlighted the difference between being successful as a media personality and understanding how to fully capitalize on the business side of media.

Hill appeared to admire Martin’s ability to think beyond being the talent and focus on ownership, branding, audience-building, and creating his own business opportunities.

For Hill, the admission seemed less about journalism or on-air ability and more about recognizing that being good at media and being good at the business of media are two different skills.
