Lindsay Clancy Trial: Prosecution and Defense Cases

The prosecution argues that Lindsay Clancy deliberately planned the killings, alleging she sent her husband, Patrick, out on errands so she would be alone with their children. If convicted of first-degree murder, she could face life in prison without parole.

The defense, led by attorney Kevin Reddington, argues that Clancy was not guilty by reason of insanity. Her attorneys say she was suffering from severe bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, including auditory hallucinations that commanded her to kill her children and herself.

The prosecution has rested its case, and the defense has begun presenting witnesses. Clancy’s mother, sister and former mother-in-law have testified that she was a loving mother who had repeatedly asked for help as her mental health deteriorated.

A defense expert, clinical and forensic psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel, testified that Clancy suffered from a mental disease that left her unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions. He also said she recalled hearing a male voice ordering her to kill her children and herself.

After the killings, Clancy jumped from a second-story window and suffered injuries that left her permanently paralyzed from the waist down. She remains held without bail at Tewksbury State Hospital, where she receives mental-health treatment.

Patrick Clancy has since moved to New York, divorced Lindsay and remarried as he continues rebuilding his life after the deaths of their children.
