Some careers are built through careful planning. Others begin with a passion that refuses to stay quiet. For Boston-based fashion stylist Tara West, fashion was never just about clothing—it was about confidence, identity, and helping people become the best version of themselves.
During our conversation on The Collab Show, Tara shared the inspiring journey that took her from marriage and family therapy to becoming a sought-after fashion stylist, content creator, blogger, and podcast host. Her story proves that sometimes the biggest opportunities begin the moment you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone.
From Therapy to Styling
Before building her fashion brand, Tara spent years working as a marriage and family therapist, helping children and families through some of life’s most difficult moments.
“I really enjoyed helping people,” she explained, “but it wasn’t my passion.”
Ironically, one thing always stood out during her years as a therapist—her wardrobe.
“I was always overdressed,” she laughed. “People would tell me, ‘You’re too dressed up for a therapist.’ But I didn’t know how not to be.”
Fashion had always been part of who she was. After having her third child, Tara made herself a promise: by the time her youngest started kindergarten, she would have her own business.
That promise became the beginning of Tara West Fashion.
Building a Business Before Social Media Took Off
Nearly a decade ago, before Instagram had become a marketing powerhouse, Tara relied almost entirely on word-of-mouth networking.
She hosted styling events at local stores, invited everyone she knew, and hoped people would show up.
Eventually, a mentor encouraged her to embrace social media.
At first, the idea terrified her.
“I didn’t even like taking family photos,” Tara admitted. “Putting myself online felt uncomfortable.”
But she pushed through the fear.
Today, she creates fashion content for both her own platforms and major brands while producing her weekly blog and hosting Shorts, a business and fashion podcast.
Growth Begins Outside Your Comfort Zone
One of the strongest themes throughout our conversation was the importance of embracing fear.
“If it scares you, you should do it,” Tara said.
Whether it was launching her blog, posting her first outfit online, or reaching out to industry leaders she admired, Tara learned that growth rarely happens inside familiar territory.
She believes opportunities don’t simply appear—they’re created.
“I feel like you need to create opportunity to have opportunity happen. It doesn’t just happen for you.”
Even today, despite years of success, Tara continues reaching out to people who inspire—and even intimidate—her.
“They could say no,” she said. “But you never know unless you ask.”
Learning to Embrace Rejection
Like every entrepreneur, Tara has heard far more “no’s” than “yeses.”
Rather than seeing rejection as failure, she sees it as part of the process.
“I always tell my interns you’re going to hear a lot more no than yes. That just makes the yes even sweeter.”
That mindset has helped her remain persistent through difficult seasons.
Her advice?
Never give up.
“Every time I think, ‘Why am I doing this?’ something happens that reminds me why I started.”
Fashion Is More Than Clothing
One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation was hearing Tara explain the psychology behind style.
Because of her therapy background, she understands that clothing affects much more than appearance.
It affects confidence.
“When you wake up and wear something that makes you feel confident, you’re going to have a really good day.”
For Tara, fashion isn’t about buying expensive clothes or chasing trends.
It’s about mindset.
She encourages people to wear outfits that make them feel like themselves—even on difficult days.
When confidence increases, everything else begins to shift.
Fashion Without Losing Yourself
One misconception Tara often hears is that hiring a stylist means someone else completely changes who you are.
That couldn’t be further from her philosophy.
Instead of replacing someone’s identity, Tara works to elevate it.
“I’m not trying to change your personality,” she explained. “I just want to elevate your style.”
Whether someone loves bold colors, vintage pieces, or minimalist fashion, her goal is to help them express who they already are—not become someone else.
That idea inspired a phrase during our interview:
Don’t just dress to impress. Dress to express.
A Childhood That Shaped Her Passion
Tara credits much of her love for fashion to her grandmother, who raised her for much of her childhood.
Growing up in Beverly Hills, her grandmother frequently took her to fashion shows at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.
Those experiences planted seeds that would later grow into a lifelong career.
Although Tara describes her upbringing as complicated, one lesson always remained consistent:
No matter what was happening behind closed doors, you showed up looking your best.
Today, she views that lesson through a healthier lens.
Getting dressed isn’t about hiding your struggles.
It’s about taking care of yourself despite them.
“It’s not about ignoring your problems,” Tara explained. “It’s about asking, ‘How do I make it through today in the best way that I can?’ For me, that’s dressing well.”
Confidence Starts With You
As our conversation came to a close, Tara shared advice that applies to entrepreneurs, professionals, creatives, and anyone pursuing a dream.
Success doesn’t happen overnight.
Confidence must be built.
Mindset matters.
And the only way to discover what’s possible is to keep moving forward—even when fear is present.
Her message was simple but powerful:
- Create your own opportunities.
- Don’t let rejection stop you.
- Wear what makes you feel confident.
- Never stop growing.
- And if something scares you, it’s probably worth doing.

Final Thoughts
Tara West’s journey reminds us that our greatest calling often begins where our greatest fears exist. She traded certainty for purpose, transformed a lifelong passion into a thriving career, and continues to empower others—not by changing who they are, but by helping them express it with confidence.
As I told Tara during our conversation, fashion is more than style—it is a form of therapy.
And perhaps the best takeaway from our interview is this:
Don’t simply dress to impress. Dress to express who you truly are.
