James Anthony Carmichael — Rest in Peace

James Anthony Carmichael, born September 14, 1941, in Gadsden, Alabama, was a Grammy-winning musician, arranger, and record producer whose work helped shape the sound of R&B and soul music for decades. He got his start in Los Angeles arranging and producing for some of Motown’s biggest acts, including The Temptations and the Jackson 5, before going on to become one of the most sought-after producers in the industry.

Carmichael’s greatest legacy was his long creative partnership with the Commodores and Lionel Richie, helping craft the lush, orchestral sound that defined some of the era’s most beloved hits. He also lent his talents to Diana Ross and Atlantic Starr, among many others.

A true architect behind the scenes, JC Carmichael shaped the careers of iconic artists while letting the music speak for itself. His arrangements were timeless, his ear was impeccable, and his influence will be heard for generations to come.

Rest in peace, James Anthony Carmichael. Thank you for the music. 🎵
