Hugo Black was an ex Ku Klux Klan member. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article

Hugo Black had been a KKK member from 1923–1925, and after resigning was reportedly given lifetime honorary membership. When this was exposed by the Pittsburgh News Gazette, it sparked widespread outrage, with editorials and politicians demanding his resignation. Black, who was in England at the time, declined to comment publicly.
