During the taping of Morton Downey Jr.’s talk show, a heated argument between CORE National Chairman Roy Innis and activist Al Sharpton turned physical when Innis knocked Sharpton backwards out of his chair. By Wednesday, the two were discussing settling things more formally — with a charity boxing match.
Innis and Sharpton, both guests at Tuesday night’s taping, clashed over the question of Black community leadership. Tension escalated after Innis claimed he had previously defended Sharpton, a claim Sharpton flatly rejected. Innis then shoved the Brooklyn preacher over in his chair, sparking several brawls in the audience and halting production for roughly 20 minutes until police arrived.
Sharpton was not injured. According to executive producer Bill Boggs, the two men spent the remainder of the show trading accusations from opposite sides of a table. The episode was set to air August 30.
