A suspect is dead after an apparent intentional vehicle ramming and shooting at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The driver reportedly steered around security bollards before crashing into the building’s front doors and starting a fire, then was engaged by synagogue security.
No injuries beyond the suspect have been reported. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said there is no longer “active stimulus” at the scene, though investigators are still working to determine if another person was involved.
Children at the synagogue’s early childhood learning center were evacuated, with parents directed to pick them up at the nearby Jewish Community Center. Several surrounding schools entered secure mode, and the FBI confirmed agents were on scene.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack, stating that antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan. The incident comes amid heightened tensions following the U.S. and Israel’s conflict with Iran, which began in late February, prompting increased security around Jewish communities nationwide.
