These restraints were used during U.S. slavery to control, punish, and dehumanize enslaved people. Iron neck collars restricted head movement and made escape difficult, sometimes catching on trees or fences if someone tried to run. Shackles and chains were used to limit movement during transport, sales, or forced marches, treating people as cargo rather than human beings. The presence of smaller restraints made specifically for children shows that slavery targeted entire families, not just adults. Beyond physical confinement, these devices inflicted constant pain, caused injuries and infections, and served as psychological weapons meant to instill fear, enforce submission, and break the human spirit. Ultimately, their purpose was not safety or order but to maintain a system of forced labor and white supremacy through violence and terror.
