On January 3, 2026, at the Al Smith Wrestling Invitational in Mishawaka, Indiana, high school wrestling assistant coach Chris Fleeger and Notre Dame head football coach Marcus Freeman were involved in an incident following a wrestling match. According to reports, Fleeger and Freeman exchanged words after the match, and Fleeger subsequently filed a police report accusing Freeman of battery. Law enforcement investigated the allegation and forwarded the case to the local prosecutor’s office to determine whether charges should be filed.
