Dick Gregory says Black Americans should stop singing the song “Amazing Grace” and stop referring to themselves as a wretch, because it was written by John Newton, a slave ship owner who was referring to himself. He only wrote the song because he thought he was going to lose his life in a storm. He did not immediately end his involvement in the slave trade as he promised and continued in the slave trade for several years, never giving up the wealth he made from slavery.
