Are Schools Rewarding Obedience More Than Curiosity?
A common criticism of modern education is that schools often reward students for following instructions rather than for asking questions. This has led to the popular claim that “A students are obedient, while D and F students are curious but not challenged enough.” Although this statement is an oversimplification, it raises important questions about how schools measure success.
Grades do not measure a person’s intelligence, creativity, or potential. They primarily measure how well a student performs within a school’s evaluation system. Students who consistently complete assignments, prepare for tests, meet deadlines, and follow classroom expectations are more likely to earn high grades. These are valuable skills, but they are not the same as curiosity or innovation.

Likewise, low grades do not automatically indicate a lack of ability. Some students who receive D’s or F’s are deeply curious about subjects outside the classroom. They may spend hours programming, building electronics, writing stories, creating art, or teaching themselves advanced topics online. Others struggle because of learning differences, family circumstances, mental health challenges, or a lack of engagement with the way school is taught. There is no single explanation for poor grades.

One reason this debate persists is that many schools use a largely linear teaching model. Students move through the same curriculum at roughly the same pace, regardless of their interests or learning styles. Lessons follow a predetermined sequence, and assessments focus on mastery of specific standards. This system helps ensure that all students learn core concepts, but it can also limit opportunities for exploration.

For students who learn quickly, this structure can become repetitive. They may finish assignments early, understand concepts before their classmates, and spend much of their time waiting rather than exploring new ideas. Over time, boredom can reduce motivation, even in capable students.

Other students may learn best through experimentation, discussion, or hands-on projects instead of lectures and worksheets. If instruction is primarily designed around one teaching style, these students may appear to struggle academically despite having strong intellectual abilities.

At the same time, not every subject can be taught without structure. Mathematics, languages, and many scientific concepts build upon earlier knowledge. Learning algebra before calculus or basic grammar before advanced writing is both logical and necessary. A structured curriculum provides an important foundation.

The challenge is finding the right balance between structure and exploration. Schools need to teach essential knowledge while also giving students opportunities to ask questions, pursue personal interests, solve open-ended problems, and develop creativity. Educational approaches such as project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, and personalized learning attempt to achieve this balance by allowing students greater ownership over their learning while still maintaining academic standards.

Ultimately, the goal of education should not be to produce students who simply follow directions, nor should it assume that curiosity alone is enough for success. The strongest learners often combine curiosity with discipline, creativity with persistence, and independent thinking with a willingness to master foundational skills.

Rather than viewing “A students” and “D or F students” as opposing groups, it is more accurate to recognize that intelligence, curiosity, creativity, conscientiousness, and academic performance are separate qualities. A student may excel in one, several, or all of them.

A successful education system should strive to recognize and cultivate all of these qualities—not just the ones that are easiest to grade.
