Joe McCann says the trip’s tragic end was rooted in Ashlee’s long-building emotional pain. She had desperately wanted a baby — had even researched what their child would look like — but learned in January 2026 that she might not be able to conceive. That news broke her, and McCann believes it set off a mental health spiral that never fully recovered.
When they went snowboarding in Bend, Oregon in March, she was a different person — screaming, threatening to end the relationship, trying to open a car door on a highway, throwing a helmet at his face, and walking into traffic while threatening to kill herself. She also hit her head and got a concussion but refused care for days. After a breakdown, she admitted her real fear: that she’d lose him because she couldn’t give him a child. He reassured her, told her about a ring he’d bought, and the next day she seemed completely back to normal.
In Zanzibar in April, it all returned. She was chain smoking, drinking wine in the morning, demanding he call off the engagement. After a blowup where she smashed lamps and said she hoped she’d choke and die, security arrived. He voluntarily moved to a separate villa. Almost immediately, she began sending him texts making her intentions clear. He called repeatedly. She wouldn’t answer. Her last message to him was one word: “Stop.”
He denies any involvement in her death entirely, pointing to the Zanzibar police’s official press conference ruling it a suicide, and to ChatGPT search history on her device about lethal doses of Valium. He says he spent her final hours at the hospital coordinating her care and updating her family through a shared Google Doc. Afterward, he stayed in Zanzibar to cooperate with authorities and make sure her remains got home before he left.
He describes the public backlash — including racially motivated death threats — as horrifying, and believes he became a scapegoat for people’s grief. He says the focus should be on her memory, not suspicion of him. He plans a private memorial and is setting up a mental health foundation in her name.
