Hoes were the primary tool used on plantations. For those forced to labor in the fields, the constant cycle of pushing and pulling while bent over for long hours placed extreme strain on the body. This repetitive work caused serious physical harm, including chronic lower-back pain, spinal compression, herniated discs, and the gradual breakdown of joints in the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. Prolonged hours hunched at the waist also led to muscle strain, nerve damage, and permanent changes in posture. Over time, these injuries reduced mobility, shortened working lives, and left many people in lasting pain, with no access to rest, treatment, or medical care.
